Is wild cosmos an effective natural remedy for diabetes?

Prescription drugs for patients with Type 2 diabetes are associated with harmful side effects. Aside from this, they have also been observed to be ineffective for some people. To avoid cases like this, there are natural products that are effective against diabetes. Researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia were able to identify wild cosmos (Cosmos caudatus) as a potential treatment for Type 2 diabetes.

  • More than 387 million people are suffering from Type 2 diabetes, making it one of the leading health problems in the world.
  • Anti-diabetic drugs have been associated with side effects like weight gain, increased hypoglycemia risk, and impaired beta-cell function.
  • The use of wild cosmos as a medicinal herb for treating Type 2 diabetes is widespread in Malaysia. In addition to this, wild cosmos also has potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive activity.
  • Previous studies have shown that wild cosmos contains an abundance of bioactive compounds, including quercetin, proanthocyanidin, chlorogenic acid, catechin, and ascorbic acid.
  • Determination of the antidiabetic potential of wild cosmos was done through a randomized clinical trial.
  • The antidiabetic potential was based on the results of the metabolomic analysis, as well as biochemical, dietary intake, and physical activity assessments.

Results of the study prove that wild cosmos has antidiabetic properties and that it can be used as a safe and effective alternative for antidiabetic medications.
